Nothing New, 2015 (5′)
Nothing New is a setting of one of the most widely-beloved texts from Ecclesiastes, commissioned by the Skaneateles Festival, for the combined forces of Roomful of Teeth and NOW Ensemble, my two most beloved musical groups.
Mah sheh-ha-yah, hoo sheh-yi-h’-yah, oo-mah sheh-nah-ah-sah, hoo sh’-yay-‘ah-seh; v’-ayv kohl-kha-dash, tah-khat ha-shah-mesh.
That which hath been is that which shall be, and that which hath been done is that which shall be done; and there is nothing new under the sun.
Yaysh dah-vahr sheh-yo-mar r’-ay-zeh, kho-dosh hoo: k’-var ha-yah l’-oh-la-mim, ah-sher ha-yah mi-l’-tah-nay-noo.
Is there a thing of which it is said: “See, this is new”? — it has been already, in the ages which were before us.
Ayn zi-kh’-ron, lah-ri-sh’-nim;
v’-gam lah-ah-khah-ro-nim she-yi-yoo, lo-yi-yeh lah-hem zi-ko-ron — im she-yi-yoo, lah-ah-khah-ro-nah.
There is no remembrance of them of former times; neither shall there be any remembrance of them of latter times that are to come, among those that shall come after.
There is now no memory of former times, nor shall there be memory of latter times, among those who come after.
