Beating (2002-2003)
for flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, vibraphone, marimba, celesta, violin, viola, cello
Beating is a work about beats: their regularity or irregularity, their conflict with one another, their presence or absence. The first section presents three beats that clash against one another, but ultimately come together, reluctantly, to form a dance. In the middle section, there is no pulse at all, giving space for the melodic material from the first section to be developed. In the third section, the beats return, with one of the three pulses gradually dominating the others and bringing them together in another, grander dance. These three sections are not movements, but rather are to be heard as a continuous narrative: the story of three beats, and of the melody that is heard in the first measure of the piece. Beating is dedicated to three of my friends, each of whom follows their own beat.
